DTF or cut HTV: which fits names, numbers and multicolor logos?
Cut HTV fits simple one-color names and numbers. DTF fits multicolor logos, outlines, gradients and fine detail. Some personalized jobs use both: one common logo for everyone and a different name or number for each person.
The useful question is what must change from piece to piece: a name, a number, a color or the entire design. A method that fits a simple roster may become cumbersome when every name has an outline and several colors.

How do DTF and cut HTV work?
Cut HTV is cut from a sheet of solid-color vinyl held on a carrier. After cutting, the unwanted areas are removed (weeded) and a heat press applies what remains. Each extra color is another sheet and another layer. This comparison concerns cut HTV; printable vinyl is a separate workflow.
Printed DTF supplies the design as a transfer. The design is printed in full color on film with a white layer and an adhesive, and a heat press bonds it to the garment. Transfer305 transfers are made for a hot peel. DTF is used on cotton, polyester and blends.

How does the number of pieces change the choice?
No method wins on time for every job. A handful of one-color names may be quick to cut. A long roster with outlines and several colors adds cutting, weeding and layering for every name.
With DTF, one printing run can hold many copies of a logo and many different names. A gang sheet is one printed sheet that holds several designs. Transfer305 gang sheets are 24.5 in wide and start at $2.99 for a 24.5 × 6 in sheet. Pressing still happens garment by garment.
Hypothetical example: 12 shirts each need one common logo and one unique name. That is 12 logo applications and 12 name applications. Choosing one method for the logo and another for names does not remove the need to match each name to its garment.
How do I decide between them?
Review the smallest lettering and the most complicated name at actual print size using the artwork guide. Compare a representative applied piece for appearance and handling before committing the run. No universal time saving or durability winner follows from the method name.
