DTF vs cut HTV for names, numbers and multicolor logos

Start with the artwork that changes

DTF and cut heat transfer vinyl can both belong in a personalized apparel job. The useful question is what must change from piece to piece: a name, a number, a color or the entire design. A method that fits a simple roster may become cumbersome when every name has an outline and several colors.

Siser describes cut HTV as material cut on a carrier, with unwanted areas removed before application. Printed DTF supplies the design as a transfer. The comparison below concerns cut HTV; printable vinyl is a separate workflow.

Compare the work, not just the roll or transfer

• One-color names: compare the time to prepare, cut and weed each name with the time to order and sort printed transfers.
• Multicolor outlines or gradients: ask whether cut layers are practical or whether a printed design better preserves the intended appearance.
• Glitter, metallic or another special finish: request the actual material that creates it. A printed picture of a finish does not establish the same physical effect.
• Garment compatibility: confirm the particular material and application instructions for either method.

Hypothetical example: 12 shirts each need one common logo and one unique name. That is 12 logo applications and 12 name applications. Choosing one method for the logo and another for names does not remove the need to match each name to its garment.

Make the decision from one representative garment

Review the smallest lettering and most complicated name at actual print size using the artwork guide. Compare a representative applied piece for appearance and handling before committing the run; no universal time saving or durability winner follows from the method name.
