A discharge effect removes dye from areas of the garment. A DTF graphic adds a printed design on top of the fabric. Choose DTF when you need a specific approved graphic in specific colors, and ask an experienced decorator about discharge when the garment's own dye-removal character is the goal.

A faded-looking graphic can be designed as an image, while a discharge effect changes areas of dye in the garment. Decide which result you actually want. A pale area shown in a mockup does not establish what color a dye-removal process will reveal on your chosen shirt.

What is discharge printing, and how does it work?

Discharge printing uses a discharging agent to remove dye from already-dyed fabric. In screen printing, the agent is applied through a screen to strip color from the printed areas. Some dye-removal products are specified for particular dyed natural fabrics. Their notes explain that the revealed color is not always white, that dyes respond differently and that samples should be tested. Those are product-specific reasons to evaluate the actual dyed blank.

How is a discharge effect different from a DTF graphic?

A discharge effect works in the dye, so it does not add a layer on top of the fabric. A DTF graphic is a printed layer. Compare a representative applied result for feel and edges on your own blank.

Which shirts respond to dye removal?

Not every shirt color, dye or blend responds the same way, so test the exact blank before you commit. Record its supplier, style, color and relevant material information. Do not transfer an approval to a different garment color or style. DTF does not depend on the garment's dye: it prints the colors in your artwork on cotton, polyester and blends.
