Can I use an embroidery file to order DTF transfers?

Not automatically. A file that drives a stitching machine holds stitch information, not the print-ready logo a DTF transfer is made from. What is inside an embroidery file?

A machine file, with an extension such as .dst, .pes, .exp or .jef, contains stitch information: where the needle goes, in what order and with which color stops. It may not include the original design objects. An editable embroidery design made in digitizing software can keep those objects, but it too is built for stitching, not for printing.

Objects rebuilt from stitch data can differ from the original. That is why changing an extension or taking a screenshot does not establish faithful print artwork.

Can I convert an embroidery file into a print file?

Not by renaming it, and not by taking a screenshot of the stitches. A stitched preview may show shapes that were simplified for stitching rather than the brand's original artwork. A redrawn version is a reconstruction, and it needs the brand owner's approval before it is used for transfers.

Preserve the embroidery files for their original purpose, and name the approved print export separately so the two never get mixed up.

Where do I find the original logo artwork?

Ask for the source in this order:

1. Ask the brand owner or designer for the original logo artwork used before digitizing.
2. If that is unavailable, ask the embroiderer whether original artwork was retained with the job.
3. Keep a photograph of the approved embroidery as a visual reference, clearly labeled as a reference.
4. If reconstruction is necessary, obtain approval of the reconstructed shapes and colors before using them for transfers.

Hypothetical example: a stitched badge uses a simplified symbol because fine detail was removed for embroidery. Printing that simplified version may be appropriate, but it is a brand decision. Do not silently rebuild missing details or claim the reconstruction is the original.

What does a print-ready logo file look like?

Once you have the artwork, the artwork requirements describe what to check:

• Format: vector PDF, SVG or AI is ideal for scalable logos and lettering. A transparent PNG works for raster images when it has enough pixel information.
• Size: start with the final print size, and aim for 300 PPI at that size for raster artwork.
• Color: use RGB/sRGB colors and keep intentional white design elements. Remove only the background you do not want printed.
• Fonts and links: in vector files, convert live fonts to outlines and embed linked images.
• Lettering and background: confirm the dimensions, the lettering and the intended background.

Treat the recovered artwork as a new print file, not as an embroidery file with a new extension.
