Decorating food-use containers: ask for evidence for the exact intended use

Ask what the evidence actually covers

If a decorated container will be used around food or drink, a good-looking sample does not answer the food-contact question. Ask the relevant supplier to connect any suitability statement to the exact materials, placement and intended use of the finished item.

The FDA's consumer explanation includes certain packaging adhesives and colorants among food-contact substances. It explains that a substance which is a food additive must be authorized for its intended use. This does not establish the status of any particular decorative transfer.

Prepare a specific evidence request

Our recommendation is to send a drawing or annotated photo of the proposed finished item with the actual product identities. Keep the decoration approval separate from acceptance for food use.

  • Item: name the container model, material and coating.
  • Placement: identify the exterior, rim, interior or other area involved.
  • Use: describe food or drink exposure, handling, cleaning and whether the item will be reused.
  • Documentation: ask the supplier what evidence covers that proposed combination and what its limits are.
  • Decision owner: identify who is qualified to assess the documentation for your project.

A statement about the undecorated container does not, by itself, evaluate added decoration. Likewise, calling a graphic “exterior” is not a complete assessment of its use.

Keep unresolved use separate from an attractive proof

Imagine a sample was prepared as a display prop and the project later changes to reusable drinkware. That hypothetical change needs a fresh review of the intended use. Approval of the prop's appearance cannot be carried over as food-use evidence.

Retain the supplier response and its product references with the project. If the evidence does not cover the proposed application, leave that use unapproved while an appropriate specialist or supplier resolves it.
