Football helmet decals: start with the helmet manufacturer’s requirements
Share
A helmet is more than a curved printing surface
Before ordering a logo for a football helmet, identify the helmet model and its current manufacturer instructions. Approval of the artwork alone does not establish that the graphic material, adhesive or application method is appropriate for that equipment.
The Riddell AXIOM guide instructs users to retain helmet labels and recommends factory-authorized adhesives and other specified materials. Schutt's product warnings advise against unapproved aftermarket items that alter the helmet or faceguard's fit, form or function. Follow the instructions for the actual helmet rather than treating these as interchangeable approvals.
Have the equipment manager define the decal specification
We recommend having the person responsible for the equipment confirm the decoration requirements with the manufacturer before requesting production. Give the decal supplier a complete specification rather than only a team logo.
- Helmet: record the manufacturer, exact model and relevant instructions.
- Material: identify the decal construction and adhesive approved for that application.
- Placement: show the proposed area together with existing labels and equipment features.
- Responsibility: identify who authorizes the work and who will apply the graphic.
Keep the approval connected to that combination. A sample sticking to the shell is not a substitute for manufacturer authorization, and a matching color does not make a different material equivalent.

Approval of the artwork alone does not establish that the graphic material, adhesive or application method is appropriate for that equipment.
Preserve the helmet's existing information
Do not remove or redesign factory labels to make room for a decorative mark. Ask the equipment manager to resolve a placement conflict through the manufacturer's instructions. A team-logo order is also not a request to reproduce a certification or warning label.
Imagine a hypothetical team ordering the same emblem for helmets and a display board. The emblem can share a design file, while the two applications need different material decisions. Approval for the display board does not carry over to the helmets.
Separate helmet work from ordinary team graphics
Send helmet decoration to a provider working within the helmet manufacturer's requirements. For a separate suitable non-protective object, review the UV-DTF options, prepare the artwork with the file guide and confirm that object's specification with Transfer305.
This guide does not offer approved helmet decals or certify equipment for play. Keep an unresolved helmet application out of a general object-decal order until the responsible equipment provider has resolved it.
