Which surfaces hold a magnetic sign?

Magnets hold on iron-based metals such as iron and steel. They do not hold on aluminum, copper or brass, or on plastic, wood, glass or fiberglass. A panel that looks like steel may be aluminum, so appearance does not settle the attachment decision.

Stainless steel varies. Some stainless steels are magnetic and some are not, or only weakly, so the word steel does not settle it either. Paint, rust, dirt and raised details can reduce contact, and magnetic sign makers specify full contact with the receiving surface and give their own removal and cleaning instructions. Follow the maker’s data for the exact product.

A quick check: hold a small magnet against several spots on the real panel, including near edges and curves. If it does not grip, a flexible sign will not hold there. If it grips, still ask the sign supplier to assess the exact surface and intended use.

When does an object decal make more sense than a reusable sign?

Hypothetical example: a business wants to move the same display sign between different fixtures. This task requires checking every receiving surface. A sign that attaches to one fixture may not work on another, even when both look metallic.

A decorative decal on a suitable object is a separate option. If the graphic is meant to stay on a smooth hard object, a UV-DTF decal is worth testing whether or not a magnet would hold there. Do not assume an adhesive graphic provides the same repeated removal and reuse, or that a UV-DTF graphic can be applied to any magnetic sheet without checking that combination.
