UV-DTF or hot foil for a packaging logo: which should you choose?
Choose hot foil when the logo must reflect light like metal. Choose UV-DTF when a printed color graphic is acceptable on your packaging. Transfer305 prints UV-DTF transfers in color. We do not apply foil and we do not print metallic inks, so a gold or silver look in our prints is simulated with process color and reads as a printed color, not a reflective metal surface.
Say which finish you want before you order a gold-colored graphic. Describe whether you want a printed color, a reflective metallic surface or a raised impression. Those are separate approval questions, even if the mockup uses the same gold swatch.

What is the difference between hot foil, metallic ink and a printed gold color?
- Hot foil (hot stamping) transfers a decorative layer with a heated die and pressure.
- Metallic ink is ink that contains metallic pigment and prints like other ink. Transfer305 does not print metallic inks.
- A printed gold color is made from process color. It can look gold, but it does not reflect light like foil.
A simulated highlight in the artwork is not foil. A printed color graphic does not reproduce a foil finish.
How do the finishes look and feel?
Foil reflects light and can carry a raised impression when the finisher adds one. A UV-DTF graphic shows the colors in your artwork. A screen and a printed transfer will not look identical, so approve a physical sample on the real package finish instead of a mockup. If a reflective finish is essential, ask a foil finisher to assess your exact packaging before you approve a method.
When should the package be decorated?
Compare the flat packaging material with the assembled package. Ask the finishing supplier which form they need, what area their process can reach and whether the decoration must happen before assembly.
If the packages are already assembled, show the actual object rather than only the flat design. Identify folds, closures and the intended logo area. Do not assume the object can pass through a finishing process just because the artwork fits on its front face. Because you apply a UV-DTF decal by hand, it can go on a package that is already assembled when the area is smooth, hard and reachable. The package material, surface finish and assembled condition all change the result, so test the actual surface.
How do you split the artwork into real production components?
- Metallic component: identify exactly which shapes need the foil finish.
- Printed component: identify photographs, gradients or other color graphics that have a separate production requirement.
- Package: state the actual material, surface finish and assembled condition.
