UV-DTF vs sublimation for mugs and tumblers: start with the blank
Share
A similar-looking mug can require a different process
Choose the decoration process before committing to the drinkware. Conventional sublimation uses heat and a blank made for that process. Sawgrass identifies polyester and suitable polymer-coated products, including mugs and tumblers. A white ceramic mug is not automatically a sublimation blank.
UV-DTF places a printed graphic onto a compatible object surface. The actual finish and adhesion still need checking. Read the UV-DTF project guide before treating a material name such as metal or plastic as approval.
Compare the complete job
- Blank: obtain its exact model, coating description and decoration instructions.
- Application: identify who will apply the design and whether that person has the suitable process and equipment.
- Appearance: compare a physical sample on the actual finish; a screen mockup cannot establish the result.
- Use: specify how the object will be handled and cleaned. Do not infer dishwasher suitability or food-contact approval from either process name.
These are selection questions, not a claim that Transfer305 supplies sublimation services or finished drinkware.
A hypothetical mixed-blank order
Suppose a project includes 18 coated sublimation mugs and 12 bottles of unknown finish. Treat them as separate compatibility checks. The first group has a documented starting point for sublimation; the second needs its blank specifications before either method is selected. The total of 30 objects does not make one method suitable for both groups.
Record the approved graphic size separately for each object. Use the artwork guide to prepare the design once the usable area is confirmed.
Send the object information with the artwork
For a UV-DTF project, send Transfer305 the object and finish details, intended use, graphic dimensions and quantity. Once suitability and scope are confirmed, use the UV-DTF ordering options. Keep the object purchase, decal order and application responsibilities clear.
