DTF vs sublimation: choose the shirt before the transfer

Read the garment specification first
A cotton black T-shirt and a light polyester sports shirt ask different questions of the decoration process. Decide which blank you actually need before comparing DTF with sublimation. A design preview on a white screen cannot settle fabric compatibility.
Sawgrass distinguishes standard sublimation from other transfer systems: its conventional sublimation guidance favors suitable light polyester or polymer-coated substrates. Its routes for cotton or dark garments use different transfer materials. Do not treat those as the same process with the same result.
Use three decision questions
- Must the blank stay fixed? If the customer has selected a cotton or dark garment, evaluate a compatible DTF transfer or another process specifically suited to it.
- Can the blank change? If suitable light polyester is acceptable, include standard sublimation in the comparison.
- What should the decorated area feel and look like? Compare actual samples on the selected blank, including solid coverage and unprinted areas. Do not assume two transfer systems will feel identical.
Hypothetical example: a project includes 20 dark cotton shirts and 10 light polyester shirts. Keep those two blank specifications separate when asking for decoration options. Selecting sublimation for the polyester group does not make it suitable for the cotton group, and choosing DTF still requires checking each garment.

Send a usable comparison brief
Record the blank brand/style, fiber composition, color, design dimensions and quantities. Review the artwork requirements and the applicable Transfer305 pressing guide; another supplier’s sublimation settings are not DTF instructions.
When DTF fits the job, start with the DTF ordering options. Use the blank specification to resolve compatibility before ordering the full quantity.
