QR Code Stickers for Business: Size, Placement and When to Add NFC

Quick answer: QR code stickers for business scan well when the code fits the scanning distance, keeps a clear quiet zone and has strong dark-on-light contrast. Make the code one tenth of the scanning distance, never smaller than 0.8 in. Transfer305 prints full-color UV-DTF QR code stickers by size at $0.06 per square inch, so a 2 x 2 in sticker is $0.24, with no minimum order.

These are UV-DTF stickers, also searched as DTF stickers. Your logo, brand colors and a short call to action print around the code, and the whole piece goes onto glass, acrylic, metal or plastic by hand. Restaurants, salons, shops, gyms and event hosts can put a link right where customers wait.

Why use QR code stickers for business?

A QR sticker pays off when people notice it, scan it without fuss and know what they will get. UV-DTF lets you build all three into one full-color piece: your branding, a clear prompt such as "Scan for the menu" and the code on a solid white block.

  • Full color around the code, with no background film left on the surface
  • Any shape: only the printed design transfers, so the sticker takes the outline of your artwork
  • Made for smooth, hard surfaces: glass, acrylic, metal, plastic, cases and rigid packaging
  • No heat press: clean the surface, lay the sticker down, rub and peel
  • One custom QR code sticker or a few thousand, with no minimum

What size should a QR code sticker be?

Size the code for the distance people scan from. The common rule of thumb is QR code size = scanning distance divided by 10. For scanning at arm's length, about 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 in) is the smallest printed size to plan for.

Scanning distance QR code size Example spot
12 in 1.2 in Product packaging, a menu in hand
24 in 2.4 in Table stand, checkout counter
36 in 3.6 in Register sign, entry door
6 ft (72 in) 7.2 in Window or wall read from across the room
Any distance Never smaller than 0.8 in Smallest arm's-length code

These sizes are for the code itself; the sticker around it can be larger, with room for your logo.

What keeps a QR code sticker scannable?

Five rules keep a QR sticker scannable:

  1. Keep the quiet zone. A standard QR code needs a clear margin four modules wide on every side (a module is one of the small squares in the code). Our guide to QR code artwork and clear space shows how to set it up.
  2. Choose the error correction level on purpose. A QR code can restore about 7% (L), 15% (M), 25% (Q) or 30% (H) of its data. DENSO WAVE, the company that invented the QR code, says level M is most frequently selected, while Q or H suits dirty or rough environments.
  3. Print dark on light. The GS1 guide to 2D code colors says matte black on white gives the highest contrast. Avoid red codes.
  4. Back clear surfaces with white. On clear glass or acrylic, print an opaque white block behind a black code. UV-DTF prints white ink, so the block is part of the same sticker.
  5. Watch the glare, then test-scan. The same GS1 guide warns against high-gloss surfaces that reflect light across a code, so keep the sticker out of direct glare from lamps and windows. Test-scan the final file at its final size before you order.

What should a business QR code link to?

Link to a page you control and keep live, because the code is printed on the sticker and cannot be edited afterward. Give each sticker one job, such as the menu, online ordering, a review page, booking, a loyalty sign-up or Wi-Fi details, and say it in a short call to action next to the code. If the page may change, use a QR code whose destination you can update, and test the final file at full size before you order.

Where should you put QR code stickers?

Pick spots where people already pause.

  • Menus and table stands: acrylic stands and plastic menu covers, linking to your menu, online ordering or reviews.
  • Windows and doors: clean glass, with a white block behind the code and the sticker on the side people scan from.
  • Counters and registers: glass, acrylic or metal near checkout, for payments, loyalty sign-ups or Wi-Fi.
  • Packaging and products: jars, bottles, tins, cases and rigid containers, linking to instructions or a reorder page. For product codes, see barcode stickers and QR code labels for products.
  • Gyms and salons: metal and plastic equipment, or a station mirror, for class schedules and online booking.

UV-DTF is not for fabric, and on any surface you have not used before, test one sticker before a full order.

How is a UV-DTF QR code sticker different from a printed sticker?

A UV-DTF QR code sticker is a transfer: the design prints on a clear carrier film, and when you rub it down and peel the carrier, only the printed design stays on the surface. A printed adhesive sticker is printed on a sheet of sticker material that is cut to shape, so the sticker material stays on the surface around the design.

UV-DTF QR code sticker Printed adhesive sticker
How it is made Design printed on a clear carrier film, rubbed on, carrier peeled away Design printed on adhesive-backed sheet material, then cut to shape
What stays on the surface The printed design only The sticker material and the design
Shape Follows the outline of your artwork Follows the cut line
Where it fits Smooth, hard surfaces such as glass, acrylic, metal and plastic; not fabric Depends on the adhesive and the sheet material

If you want the code and your artwork to sit directly on glass, acrylic, metal or plastic with no film around the design, that is what UV-DTF is for. Test one sticker on any surface you have not used before.

QR code stickers vs NFC tags: what is the difference?

NFC is an add-on, not a replacement. An NFC tag is a chip plus an antenna, and phones usually read it within about 1 to 5 cm. A UV-DTF sticker is printed graphics with no chip, so it is scanned with the camera from a distance set by the code size. If you want tap-to-open too, place a separate NFC tag next to the QR sticker.

What it is Printed full-color graphic with the code built in A chip plus an antenna; a common chip holds 144 bytes of user memory
Works with Phone cameras, from a distance set by the code size NFC-enabled phones, held within about 1 to 5 cm
Cost $0.24 for a 2 x 2 in sticker by size, less on a gang sheet Separate hardware purchase
Setup Generate the code, place it in your design, test-scan Program the chip with your link, then test the tap
Surfaces Smooth, hard surfaces: glass, acrylic, metal, plastic Metal interferes unless you use on-metal tags

How do you order QR code stickers?

Here is how to make QR code stickers that scan, from file to finished order:

  1. Generate your QR code and set the error correction level: M for most uses, Q or H for rough spots.
  2. Place the code in your design with its four-module quiet zone, a white block behind it for clear surfaces, and your logo and call to action around it. Our artwork requirements cover file setup.
  3. Size the code for the scanning distance using the table above.
  4. Test-scan the final file at full size with more than one phone.
  5. Order a few stickers through UV-DTF by size, or fill a sheet in the UV-DTF gang sheet builder. If every sticker carries a different code, lay them out yourself and upload your finished gang sheet.
  6. Check out, then collect your order in Miami once it is confirmed ready, or have it shipped.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum size for a QR code sticker?

Plan on at least 0.8 x 0.8 in (about 2 x 2 cm) for the code when people scan at arm's length. For longer distances, divide the scanning distance by 10: a code read from 24 in should be about 2.4 in. The sticker around the code can be larger, with room for your logo and a call to action.

How do I print QR code stickers?

Generate the code, place it in your design with a four-module quiet zone and test-scan the file at full size. Then order UV-DTF stickers by size or on a gang sheet; Transfer305 prints the code you send. To apply, clean the surface, rub the sticker down and peel the carrier slowly.

Do QR code stickers work on glass windows?

Yes. UV-DTF goes on clean, smooth glass. Print a white block behind a black code so it reads against the clear glass, and apply the sticker on the side people scan from. If it would sit on the outside of the window, or must be read through the glass from the other side, ask us before ordering.

What is the difference between NFC and QR code stickers?

A QR sticker is printed graphics read by a phone camera, from a distance that grows with the code size. An NFC tag is a chip plus an antenna that a phone reads within about 1 to 5 cm. UV-DTF stickers have no chip, so add a separate NFC tag if you want both.

How much do custom QR code stickers cost?

A 2 x 2 in UV-DTF QR sticker is $0.24 by size ($0.06 per square inch), and 50 fit on one 23 x 12 in gang sheet for $11.49. A 3 x 3 in sticker is $0.54 by size. There is no minimum, and you can set the quantity for each design.

Can every sticker have a different QR code?

Yes, when you supply the codes. Lay out each unique code on your own sheet file and upload it as a finished gang sheet. We print the codes you send and do not generate them, so test-scan each one before you upload.
