QR codes on transfers: plan the clear space before printing

The blank margin is part of the code

A QR code is more than its dark squares. DENSO WAVE specifies a clear quiet zone four modules wide on every side of a standard QR Code. A module is one small square in the code’s grid. Nearby text, borders or background artwork must stay outside that margin.

For a transfer, do not assume a transparent area will remain visually clear on the final garment or object. Decide what light background the code needs and preserve intentional white artwork in the export.

Calculate the whole footprint

Hypothetical geometry example: a code with 29 modules across, plus four modules on each side, occupies 37 modules across. If you choose a module width of 0.8 millimeters, the complete footprint is 37 × 0.8 = 29.6 millimeters. The printed pattern itself is 23.2 millimeters wide. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended minimum size or a tested Transfer305 specification.

When the available area is smaller, do not crop off the margin. Reconsider the content, code design, placement or overall size, then test the actual result.

Test the destination and the applied piece

  1. Open the intended destination and confirm it is the page the buyer should reach.
  2. Scan a print at the intended size before committing the design.
  3. After application, scan the actual item with more than one phone under representative lighting and distance.
  4. Check it in normal use: garment folds, object curvature and reflections can change the viewing conditions.

The artwork guide covers file preparation. Select DTF for compatible garments or UV-DTF for suitable objects. Preserve the tested file and destination; a successful screen scan alone does not verify the applied transfer.
